When thinking of hiking in Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro comes to mind instantly – it is Africa’s highest mountain, after all. As alluring as it might sound, this hike is not for the light-hearted and requires a lot of preparation. There are several trails leading to the top, with the climb itself taking at least five days. Ol Doinyo Lengai is a must-visit active volcano that offers one of the most fascinating Tanzania hikes ever. Not only does it have the coolest lava on Earth, but it also boasts a unique composition of lava that resembles black oil. In fact, Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only volcano to have natrocarbonatite lava that turns white as soon as it comes into contact with water.
As you ascend the mountain, you will get the point why the local tribe called it the Mountain of Gods – especially when you step onto the volcanic ash and witness the spectacular views from above. Make sure to wear slip-resistant shoes, since the descent is just as challenging as the ascent.
